My top 10 tips for shopping secondhand online
Handy hints & tips I’ve picked up along the way on my secondhand journey!

If you’d asked me a few years ago if I’d be a huge advocate for buying secondhand clothes, I wouldn’t have believed you! I used to spend a considerable amount of money on quality clothes from my favorite brands, and secondhand shopping never crossed my mind. Now, over half of my wardrobe consists of secondhand finds, and I absolutely love it! But let’s be clear I’m totally useless at thrifting and much prefer to use online platforms to find gems, and this works for me!
I frequently get asked for tips on how to get started when it comes to online secondhand shopping, so I’ve been compiling a few handy tips that have helped me on my journey…
1. Know Your Measurements
Have your exact measurements handy, including bust, waist, hips, and inseam. Sizes can vary significantly between brands, so knowing your measurements ensures a better fit.
2. Read Descriptions Carefully
Pay close attention to item descriptions. Look for details about the condition of the garment, any flaws, the material, and the brand. Sellers who provide detailed descriptions are often more reliable.
3. Check Seller Ratings and Reviews
If you're using a platform like eBay, Depop or Vinted check the seller’s ratings and reviews. Positive feedback from previous buyers can give you confidence in your purchase.
4. Look for Detailed Photos
Ensure the listing has clear, high-quality photos from multiple angles. Photos should show any potential wear and tear, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
5. Ask Questions
This one I’ve definitely got a lot better at! Don’t hesitate to reach out to the seller with any questions you might have. Whether it’s about the fit, colour, or condition, getting your queries answered can help avoid any unpleasant surprises.
6. Know what you are looking for
This is the one that’s helped me the most to find things that I love! Have a list of items you are looking for, use the search filters to narrow down options by size, brand, colour, and condition. This can help you find exactly what you're looking for more quickly.
7. Be Patient and Persistent
This is often so difficult when you know you can walk into a store and buy it brand new, but honestly speaking from experience, it really does pay to be patient! Finding the perfect secondhand item can take time. Check back frequently, as new items are listed regularly.
8. Set a Budget
It’s easy to get carried away when prices are lower than retail. Set a budget for your secondhand shopping to keep your spending in check.
9. Follow Your Favorite Sellers
Many platforms allow you to follow sellers. This way, you’ll be notified when they list new items, giving you first dibs on new finds. I also find liking things is a great way of keeping track of things that have caught your eye!
10. Trust Your Instincts
I’ve had a really positive experience buying secondhand but if a deal seems too good to be true or a seller seems sketchy, trust your gut and move on. It’s better to miss out on an item than to end up with a problem.
Shopping secondhand online is a great way to find unique pieces and reduce your environmental impact. Happy thrifting!
Thank you for reading and letting me share my favorite tips for shopping secondhand online! I hope you find them helpful for your next purchase.
