My top 6 Winter Outfit Formulas - tried & tested.
Easy repeatable outfit formulas to take the stress out of getting ready this winter.
We are firmly in winter in Melbourne, but If you are basking in the lovely sun in the northern hemisphere, save this inspo for when it turns cold! I’ve been reviewing my most reached for outfit formulas since the temperatures dropped, and I’m so excited to share them with you.
If you follow my weekly Substack or my Instagram account, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of an outfit formula. Thinking about them has helped define my personal style, transforming my wardrobe from "nothing to wear" to a wardrobe full of outfits no matter the season!
And the best part? You don’t need to go out and buy every piece I’m wearing—you’ve probably already got lots of these items hanging in your wardrobe!
The Classic Coat + Sweater + Jeans Combo
Nothing beats the timeless appeal of a well-tailored coat, cozy sweater, and your favourite jeans. This is one of my most worn outfits, it’s super easy but always feels elevated. I love to wear a neutral-coloured coat like camel (my Assembly Label one is my go-to) black, or grey for versatility, paired with a chunky knit sweater and a pair of straight or wide-leg jeans. I finish the look with ankle boots and a warm scarf.
The Knitted Maxi Dress + Boots + Wool Coat
This outfit formula is a relatively new one for me this season, and I’m really loving it as a great alternative to jeans. The knitted dress is a winter staple that offers the perfect mix of comfort, warmth, and versatility. I've been enjoying pairing it with either my black or brown ankle boots and a wool coat, especially for days at the office and dinners out. This combination effortlessly transitions from day to night while keeping me stylish and cozy.
The Oversized Sweater + Midi Skirt
I've been embracing this outfit formula this season as a fantastic alternative to pants. A skirt and oversized sweater strike a perfect balance between comfort and elegance, making them incredibly versatile for various occasions. I've been pairing my slip skirts with chunky knits or crew neck sweaters in cozy fabrics, tucking in the front of the sweater for a polished look. Adding ankle or heeled boots and a longline coat completes the ensemble, keeping me warm and stylish.
The Blazer + Knit + Jeans
I've saved lots of winter outfit inspiration on Pinterest featuring oversized blazers, so I've been eager to incorporate this look into my winter wardrobe. Combining casual and tailored pieces is a great way to achieve a modern, laid-back style. I love layering a textured knit under a structured blazer and pairing it with my favourite jeans for an outfit that's perfect for running errands or a casual day at the office. To complete the look, I've been reaching for flats or boots.
Striped Knit + Wide-Leg Pants + Oversized Coat
I've worn this outfit formula a few times already this season, and each time, I feel put-together and polished. The combination of a striped top, wide-leg pants, and an oversized wool coat creates a cozy yet sophisticated look. I prefer neutral tones for a classic feel, and adding a pair of Converse gives the ensemble a casual, edgy vibe.
Leather pants + Knit + Coat + Converse
This outfit formula is a perfect blend of edgy and casual chic. I bought these Agolde recycled leather pants last year and love how they instantly make me feel cooler when I wear them! Leather pants can be quite polarizing, but to make them an everyday item, I pair them with cozy knit sweaters, textured coats and Converse sneakers. This combination adds a laid-back vibe whilst still keeping you warm!
Winter dressing doesn’t have to be stressful. With these six favourite outfit formulas, you’ll have a go-to guide for stylish and comfortable looks for the rest of the season. Mix and match these pieces to suit your personal style and embrace the chilly weather with confidence. Happy dressing!
