Summer Outfit Formulas for When I Don’t Know What to Wear
5 fail safe outfit formulas that I’ve been wearing on repeat all summer long
Hello lovely readers,
There’s something about summer that feels both freeing and overwhelming when it comes to getting dressed. On one hand, the simplicity of fewer layers is a relief, but it also means every piece of your outfit is on full display, no jackets or sweaters to fall back on. That's why I’ve been relying on a handful of fail-proof outfit formulas this summer for those moments when I find myself staring at my wardrobe, feeling uninspired.
As a 40-year-old working mum of three, I need outfits that effortlessly blend comfort, practicality, and just the right amount of polish. These are the combinations I reach for again and again. So whether you’re nearing the end of the summer season and feeling a little fatigued in the wardrobe department, or you’re in the northern hemisphere eagerly anticipating warmer days, hopefully, these outfit formulas offer a little inspiration for everyone.
1. Shorts & Top

If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know my love for a simple denim outfit runs deep—and denim shorts are no exception. They truly go with everything, don’t they? My ultimate go-to is a basic tee (this Uniqlo one is my favorite) paired with high-waisted denim shorts. It’s effortlessly casual yet thoughtfully styled. When the temperature drops, I like to drape a cozy knit over my shoulders for that extra layer.
To complete the look, I reach for my trusted brown Assembly Label sandals or Tevas, along with a woven tote that’s perfect for carrying all the kid essentials. When I feel like switching things up, I swap the tee for an oversized linen shirt, a cropped linen cami, or a simple tank top. These easy combinations keep my summer style feeling fresh and versatile.
2. Jeans With Anything

No roundup of outfit formulas would be complete without a pair of jeans. They’re a year-round staple in my wardrobe—ingrained in my personal style and always making me feel comfortable and confident. To keep them summer-ready, I balance the covered legs with a sleeveless top, like a tank or cami, for a cool and breezy look. On cooler days, I simply add a cashmere knit, blazer, or denim shacket for an effortless layer of warmth.
I love the simplicity of this understated combo. It’s effortless yet polished, and it pairs perfectly with my two favourite denim cuts at the moment: the wide-leg jean and the barrel jean. It’s proof that jeans can absolutely be a summer staple.
To keep the look feeling seasonally appropriate, I reach for sandals or thongs and finish off with a rattan bag for an instant touch of summer. It’s an easy way to stay cool and stylish, even in denim.
3. The Hero Dress

As summer rolls on, I’ve found myself reaching for dresses more and more—I just love how versatile they are. I’ve worn them to the office for a polished look, on date nights, and even while running around after the kids on hot Melbourne days. I used to shy away from dresses, never quite feeling 100% comfortable in them, but honing in on the styles, colours, and fabrics that suit me has been a game-changer.
This summer, I’ve fully embraced a mini dress era. They’re perfect for a laid-back, casual vibe, but I’ve also loved dressing up a little black mini with playful tassels for Christmas festivities. That said, midi and maxi dresses have been on heavy rotation too. They’re the ultimate one-and-done heroes that make getting dressed a breeze—and I’m always thrilled when they come with pockets!
4. Wide-Leg Pants & Sandals

This outfit formula has quickly become a summer favourite of mine because it strikes the perfect balance between comfort and style. Wide-leg pants offer an easy, breezy silhouette that keeps me cool while still looking polished. They’re effortlessly chic with that relaxed, laid-back vibe that feels just right for the season.
I’ve been reaching for my Arket silk pants, which feel luxuriously light, and I can’t get enough of my Daughters of India striped cotton pants—they’re the perfect blend of comfort and style. This combo has been on heavy rotation, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon!
Pairing them with sandals keeps the look feeling light and casual, making it perfect for everything from school runs to coffee dates. Whether I’m reaching for chunky sandals for a modern edge or strappy ones for a more feminine touch, this combination is always a winner. Plus, it’s endlessly versatile—just switch up the top or accessories, and you’ve got a completely new outfit.
5. The Simple Skirt Combo

This outfit formula definitely wouldn’t have made an appearance last summer, but this year I’ve been loving it—and it’s all thanks to two new skirt purchases. A preloved Dissh linen maxi skirt I bought for Bali to pair with its matching vest. And second, an Assembly Label white poplin maxi skirt I scored in their sale. Both have been game-changers for my summer style.
When I want a more polished look, I reach for the linen maxi skirt. I love pairing it with a simple tee, an oversized linen shirt, or my go-to linen longline vest. These combinations have been perfect for the office, instantly making me feel put together without trying too hard.
The white poplin skirt, on the other hand, has been so much fun to style. I’ve fully embraced the crop top trend with this one—whether it’s a linen crop or a simple cotton tee. I love how it sits just above the waistline, eliminating any need to tuck in excess fabric. It’s an effortlessly chic look that feels fresh and modern for summer.
The Secret Sauce: Accessories

I firmly believe that accessories can make or break an outfit. The right pieces—like a sun hat, layered necklaces, or my favourite woven tote bag—can instantly elevate even the simplest looks. They add that extra touch of personality and pull everything together effortlessly.
And when I really want to feel polished? Taking a moment to style my hair and add a little makeup does wonders for me. It’s amazing how those small finishing touches can completely transform an outfit and make me feel more put together.
